This paper analyses the study developed regarding the job of the social worker in the management of the Unified Health System (SUS) in Rio Grande do Sul as a way to unravel the field of Health Management for the social worker. It had as a goal to identify the relation between the job of the social worker, the ethical-political project of the profession, and the attributions for the management in SUS. The study is qualitative in nature. The investigation happened at the Secretaria Estadual de Saúde do Rio Grande do Sul (State Department of Health of Rio Grande do Sul), with social workers linked to the administration. As a result, it was found in the speech of the subjects and in the reflection with the authors, a critical analysis of the observed reality, which points to the importance of the insertion of the social worker in the management of SUS in Rio Grande do Sul and their skills and competences to be in this space as a process of professional insertion reassuring the identity of these social workers.
