Child labor in the Brazilian Amazon: a study in the municipality of Oriximiná- PA

Child labor is a phenomenon that crosses Brazilian history, with origins in colonization. During the period of verticalization of capitalist production the work of children and adolescents was socialized. In the 1980s, these perspectives were questioned, in the midst of civilizing processes that reached the periphery of capitalism. In the 1990s, social programs were created to address the issue. The research that originates this article was developed in Oriximiná-PA, a municipality located at the heart of the Brazilian Amazon. We carried out 1850 household questionnaires. We found that despite the lasting engagement with PETI, there was no eradication of the phenomenon in the municipality. Child labor continues to occur, with contours that are related to the economic, social and cultural characteristics of the different groups that inhabit that territory.
