Abstract

This paper aims to present the historical-philosophical context of the emergence of the University of Paris in the 12th century. During this period, Abelard took over the School of the Cathedral of Notre Dame. Which served as the original source for the birth of the University of Paris. The medieval university emerged as a corporate association characterized by the disputatio, where professors debated among themselves or with
students. With the establishment of this institution and its characteristics, it became possible to observe its activity based on the liberal arts, which were part of the second level of studies in the Palatine School organized by Alcuin of York. The relevance of dialectics as an autonomous science demonstrates that the University of Paris was a place for the production and preservation of
knowledge in the medieval period.
